Methadone can be used for the treatment of opioid addiction or for the treatment of chronic pain.
Any provider with a DEA schedule II waiver can prescribe methadone for the treatment for pain. Methadone has unique pharmacological characteristics which must be taken into consideration when treating individuals with methadone
To prescribe methadone for the treatment of addiction, one must go to a federally licensed methadone treatment facility.
